Matthias Stolmár


Matthias studied chemistry and chemical engineering at Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen, Germany and at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne and obtained a Ph.D. in Chemistry from University of Lausanne, Switzerland. Matthias holds further a law degree of the University of Strasbourg (CEIPI) in Patent Litigation in Europe.

Matthias has worked both in private practice, and in-house, in the patent department of Robert Bosch GmbH prior to establishing Stolmár & Partner. His practice draws on this experience and extends to a wide range of subject matter. Matthias‘ clients include both large and small companies, universities and government funded organisations. Stolmár & Partner does substantial business in East Asia advising and supporting European clients , especially in Korea, China and Japan. His firm has been consistently recognized by its peers as recommended IP law firm for chemistry in juve legal since 2012 and has been ranked among the 160 best European Patent law firms by the Financial Times in 2020.

Matthias extensive experience in patent and related matters also covers pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, materials for lithium ion batteries, fine chemicals and process development, medical devices and diagnostic tools, and technical materials such as alloys, ceramics, polymers, semiconductors and nanotubes.

Matthias’ practice involves providing commercially focused advice to business managers and to R&D groups on all aspects of patent strategy and portfolio management. This includes obtaining and defending patent rights, providing opinions on freedom to operate where third party intellectual property rights exist, challenging third party patent rights and conducting due diligence to support corporate acquisition and licensing deals.

Matthias is German and Swiss Patent Attorney as well as a European Patent and Trademark Attorney. He is also allowed to practice before the Austrian (ÖPA), Belgian and French (INPI) Intellectual Property Office.

Matthias is a member of ECTA, epi, FICPI, LES, EPLIT and AIPPI.

Matthias serves as of-counsel to Zumtobel Kronberger Rechtsanwälte OG where he advises Austrian clients in all matters of IP in close cooperation with Dr. Thomas Schneider.
